Potts Wins Ironman 70.3 Steelhead

With a strong running leg, TYR’s Andy Potts was able to finish the Ironman 70.3 Steelhead on Saturday, August 1st with a gold medal finish-adding yet another win to his summer season. The 2009 Steelhead title was up for grabs in Benton Harbor, MI, as Potts entered the starting line with other highly competitive pro men-including John Kenny, Andrew Starvkowicz, and Kieran Doe. Potts arrived anticipating another high-placing performance after previous summer wins including the grueling 2009 Accenture Escape from Alcatraz in San Francisco, CA Coming out of the swim in the Great Lakes, Potts-wearing the Tracer Sayonara- was well behind Kenny who split 21 minutes in the swim to get a 50 second lead. On the bike portion, Potts was able to make up ground on Kenny, but was tracked down and passed by Starvkowicz. Working to lengthen the gap, he entered T2 with a comfortable 5:33 cushion over Potts. With a stand-out run needed to get on the medal podium, Potts took off and delivered. By the 8.5 mile marker, Potts was able to delete the 5:33 deficit over Starvkowicz to finish in 3:54:48. The time bested the field for him to claim the race title. Starvkowicz was second finishing in 3:56.44 while Doe was third in 3:59.31.
