GREVERS, THOMAN TAKE OLYMPIC GOLD & SILVER IN 100M BACKSTROKE; GREVERS, BERENS, AND WEIR PART OF USA MEDAL WINNING RELAYS

Huntington Beach, CA – July 30, 2012 – TYR athlete Matt Grevers set a new Olympic Record and took home the Gold Medal for USA in the 100m Backstroke with his time of 52.18 at the London Games. Grevers won the Silver Medal in the 2008 Beijing Games, and was the clear favorite heading into today’s race as he finished first in both the preliminary and semi-final heats yesterday. Grevers’ time was just shy of his textile best of 52.08, which he set back in June at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, NE. This is the first individual Olympic Gold for Grevers, and brings his total Olympic medal count to five. Grevers was also apart of the Silver Medal winning 400m freestyle relay team here in London, where he swam the second leg in the preliminaries. His time of 47.54 was the fastest split of the American team in prelims, and helped qualify the U.S. in second position. Grevers also has two gold medals for his participation in the 400m medley relay and 400m freestyle relay in the Beijing Games. Winning his first Olympic medal, TYR’s Nick Thoman saved his best effort for the final with a time of 52.92 taking the Silver right behind his teammate Matt Grevers. Thoman was part of the Gold-Medal winning 400m medley relay at the 2011 FINA World Championships and also holds a world record in the 100 SCM backstroke for his performance at the 2009 Duel in the Pool. Thoman swam out of lane two and was able to hold off the competition to give the Americans a 1,2 punch and his first Olympic Medal. Teaming up with Grevers, TYR athlete Ricky Berens also received a Silver Medal for his participation in the 400m freestyle relay preliminaries. Berens swam a 48.52 split in the third leg of the relay helping to qualify the U.S. to the finals. This is Berens’ second Olympic medal as he won Gold in Beijing in the 800m freestyle relay, which he will race again later this week in London. On the women’s side, TYR athlete Amanda Weir helped the U.S. women take Bronze in the 400m freestyle relay. Weir also has two silver medals from the 2004 Athens Games in 400m freestyle relay and 400m medley relay, bringing her total Olympic medal count to three. Grevers, Thoman, and Berens all raced in TYR’s AP12 Speed Suit Series, while Weir was outfitted in TYR’s Tracer B-Series Technology.
