Mengual and Fuentes Earn Silver for Spain

Representing the TYR-sponsored Spanish Federation, Gemma Mengual and Andrea Fuentes finished second in the duet technical final for synchronized swimming Tuesday, July 21st at the 13th FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy. Competing at the Foro Italico, home to many of the championship’s events, the two-time Olympic silver medalists Mengual and Fuentes gave a strong performance in front of morning’s spectators and the ten judges scoring the event. Scoring as high as 9.9 in the overall impression categories, the pair posted an overall performance of 97.333. Despite their efforts, Mengual and Fuentes fell short of the gold, as Russia’s Anastasia Davydova and Svetlana Romashina scored a 98.667. Mengual arrived at the duet technical final after already capturing an individual medal in the technical solo event on Monday, July 20th with a score of 97.833. She was a bronze medalist in the event at the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne. The Spanish Federation has created a reputation for being highly competitive in synchronized swimming, with this most current silver medal being no exception. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Spain won silver in the team event-validating their nation’s talent.
