Under the clear skies of Madison, WI on Sunday, September 13th, Amy Marsh of Austion, TX claimed her first title at the 2009 Ford Ironman Wisconsin, clocking in at 9:43:59 to beat the next female by nearly 18 minutes.
The race began for Marsh and the 2,405 other competitors in Wisconsin’s Lake Monona for the 2.4-mile swim. First out of the water was the reigning champion from last year’s competition, Hillary Biscay, with the rest of the field close behind. Marsh entered T1 with a 56:11 swim split.
Coming off a June 70.3 win at Buffalo Springs, Marsh was in no way out of the eyes of her competitors as they transitioned onto the bike. Quickly shifting into gear for the 112-mile bike, she made up the deficit on Biscay to pass her roughly 50 miles in and never let go of that lead. She entered the run after a 5:13:23 bike split.
Marsh’s last leg of the Ironman was highlighted by a consistent gap-building run that would keep the emerging Irene Kinnegim of the Netherlands and Biscay far behind. Splitting a 3:27:15 marathon, she successfully crossed the finish line in true dominating fashion to celebrate her first Ironman victory. Kinnegim claimed second in 10:01:34 while Biscay rounded out the podium in 10:02:58.
With the win, Marsh will look for another victory in the Ironman 70.3 distance at the Longhorn race scheduled for October 18th. Make sure to visit the News/Events section on TYR.com for updates on her race as well as the rest of TYR-sponsored professional triathletes.
